What is Trigonometry?

The term ‘trigonometry’ is derived from the Greek words ‘tri’ (meaning three), ‘gon’ (meaning sides), and ‘metron’ (meaning measure). It is a mathematical discipline that studies the relationships between the sides and angles of a triangle.

Trigonometry is one of the most important branches in mathematics that finds huge application in diverse fields. The branch called “Trigonometry” basically deals with the study of the relationship between the sides and angles of the right-angle triangle.  Hence, it helps to find the missing or unknown angles or sides of a right triangle using the trigonometric formulas, functions or trigonometric identities. In trigonometry, the angles can be either measured in degrees or radians. Some of the most commonly used trigonometric angles for calculations are 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°.  The basic trigonometric functions are used to solve problems involving triangles, and they are also used in many other areas of mathematics, such as calculus and physics.

  • Sine (sin): The sine of an angle is the ratio of the opposite side to the hypotenuse of a right triangle.
  • Cosine (cos): The cosine of an angle is the ratio of the adjacent side to the hypotenuse of a right triangle.
  • Tangent (tan): The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the opposite side to the adjacent side of a right triangle.
  • Cotangent (cot): The cotangent of an angle is the reciprocal of the tangent of an angle.
  • Secant (sec): The secant of an angle is the reciprocal of the cosine of an angle.
  • Cosecant (csc): The cosecant of an angle is the reciprocal of the sine of an angle.

Trigonometry Formulas

Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with triangles. Trigonometry is also known as the study of relationships between lengths and angles of triangles. There are an enormous number of uses of trigonometry and its formulae. For example, the technique of triangulation is used in Geography to measure the distance between landmarks; in Astronomy, to measure the distance to nearby stars and also in satellite navigation systems.

Periodic identities are as follows:

  • sin(90°−θ) = cos θ
  • cos(90°−θ) = sin θ
  • tan(90°−θ) = cot θ
  • cot(90°−θ) = tan θ
  • sec(90°−θ) = cosec θ
  • cosec(90°−θ) = sec θ

Reciprocal Identities are as follows:

  • cosec θ = 1/sin θ
  • sec θ = 1/cos θ
  • cot θ = 1/tan θ
  • sin θ = 1/cosec θ
  • cos θ = 1/sec θ
  • tan θ = 1/cot θ
