What is Speed, Time and Distance?

Speed, Time, and Distance questions are foundational in quantitative aptitude exams, often determining time management and problem-solving speed. Speed of a body is the distance covered by the body per unit time i.e. Speed = Distance/Time.

  • Speed: Speed is the rate at which a particular distance is covered by an object in motion.
  • Time: Time is an interval separating two events.
  • Distance: Distance is the extent of space between two points.

Now that we are well aware of the definition of speed, distance and time let us understand the relationship between them. It is said that an object attains motion or movement when it changes its position with respect to any external stationary point. Speed, Time and Distance are the three variables that represent the mathematical model of motion as, s x t = d.

  • Time is directly proportional to distance. It means that speed remains constant, if we have two vehicles moving two distances for two different time duration then the time is directly proportional to the distance.
  • Speed is directly proportional to distance. It means that time remains constant if we have two vehicles moving two distances at two different speeds respectively.
  • Speed is Inversely Proportional to time. It means that distance remains constant if we have two vehicles moving at two different speeds and taking times respectively.

Formula for speed calculation is Speed = Distance/Time

Basic Formulas for Speed, Time and Distance

Basic Formulas for Speed, Distance, and Time:

  • Speed = Distance / Time
  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Time = Distance / Speed

These formulas can be remembered using a simple acronym DST where D stands for DistanceS for Speed, and for Time

Each Speed, Distance and Time can be expressed in different units:

  • Time: seconds(s), minutes (min), hours (hr)
  • Distance: (meters (m), kilometers (km), miles, feet
  • Speed: m/s, km/hr

So if Distance = km and Time = hr, then as Speed = Distance/ Time; the units of Speed will be km/ hr.

Let’s now know some tricks to solve Time and Distance problems quickly.

  1. Average Speed= Total Distance / Total Time
  2. 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/sec
  3. 1 m/sec = 18/5 km/hr
  4. If the Speed of the two trains is S1 and S2 respectively and lengths are L1 and L2, then, While moving in the opposite direction 1)Relative speed = S1+S2. Time taken = [(L1 + L2)/( S1+S2)]
  5. If the Speed of the two trains is S1 and S2 respectively and lengths are L1 and L2, then, While moving in the same direction 1)Relative speed = S1-S2. Time taken = [(L1 + L2)/( S1-S2)]
  6. If the train passes an electric pole or a man, Speed = Length of the Train / Time
  7. If two trains of lengths L1 and L2 cross each other at speeds of S1 and S2, respectively, in time t, the equation is given as S1+S2 = (L1+L2)/t.

 Speed, Time and Distance Conversions? 

  • To convert from km / hour to m / sec, we multiply by 5 / 18. So, 1 km / hour = 5 / 18 m / sec
  • To convert from m / sec to km / hour, we multiply by 18 / 5. So, 1 m / sec = 18 / 5 km / hour = 3.6 km / hour
  • Similarly, 1 km/hr = 5/8 miles/hour
  • 1 yard = 3 feet
  • 1 kilometer= 1000 meters = 0.6214 mile
  • 1 mile= 1.609 kilometer
  • 1 hour= 60 minutes= 60*60 seconds= 3600 seconds
  • 1 mile = 1760 yards
  • 1 yard = 3 feet
  • 1 mile = 5280 feet
  • 1 mph = (1 x 1760) / (1 x 3600) = 22/45 yards/sec
  • 1 mph = (1 x 5280) / (1 x 3600) = 22/15 ft/sec
  • For a certain distance, if the ratio of speeds is a : b, then the ratio of times taken to cover the distance would be b : a and vice versa.

Distance = speed × time

3. A boat’s speed in still water is 45 km/h, while the river is flowing at a speed of 15 km/h. The time taken to cover a certain distance upstream is 9 h more than the time taken to cover the same distance downstream. Find the distance (in km).

Stream speed = 15 km /h

FORMULA USED:

Distance = Speed × Time

CALCULATION:

Here, still water speed = 45 km/h , stream speed = 15 km/h

Upstream speed = (45 – 15) = 30 km/h, Downstream speed = (45 + 15) = 60 km/h.

The time taken to cover the Upstream distance is 9 hours more than the Downstream

Now, let the required distance be d then,

⇒ d/30 – d/60 = 9

⇒ (2d – d)/60 = 9

4. The distance travelled by a person varies directly with the duration of the journey. If the person travels 378 km in 7 hour, in how many hours will the person cover 918 km?
